Scientists hypothesize that if time travel were possible and we could go back 1000 years, one of the things that would shock us most would be the silence. Think about it. All the background noise of our modern world: television, telephones, radios, cars, planes, refrigerators…none of which existed a thousand years ago. Some even hypothesize that for modern man that silence would be deafening. Because we are surrounded by voices: on TV, on the radio, on the Internet: all telling us what we need to know, how to be saved, how to find peace, how to be happy.
It causes me to wonder, when I tell people that they have what they need to know, how to be saved, how to find peace, how to be happy, am I just another voice among thousands? How can you know who to trust? Who really has the truth?
Well, Jesus tells us not to listen to the voices of this world. He tells us that his sheep listen to HIS voice. What Jesus did and said quietly drowns out all other voices. Because it isn’t what some 21st century preacher says that’s important, but rather what our eternal God and Savior, our 21st century Savior, tells us.
When we conger up images of a Savior in the Christian world we often first go to a baby in a lowly manger. People outside that realm might wonder about that, after all, babies aren’t going to save you from much. Babies can’t fight for you or guide you to where you should be. They can’t save you from yourselves or teach you the way to heaven.
But, of course, those who know can explain that the baby in our minds was so much more than a helpless child. He was the answer to a promise made long before. He would grow to overcome sin and death for all people by taking upon Himself our sin. He would save us from eternal damnation, something we justly deserved, yet which His love for us would not let happen, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Those who believe can proclaim as John did in 1 John 4:14, “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world.” We know that, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Just as He did when He was born to be our Savior over 2000 years ago, he lives still to hold that same title. Even today He fights for us. Even after we have proven our unworthiness time and time again. Even after we have resisted His touch in so many ways. Even with our checkered past He deems us worthy of salvation and all He asks for us to do in believe.
His love for us has not diminished and His determination to save us has not waned. We can be sure as Paul was when he wrote to the Romans in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
From humble birth to cruel death he remained true to His calling to be our Savior and, after His resurrection, he remained committed to the task. Still today He invites you to welcome Him into your hearts so that He might be your Savior also. He promises to never leave nor forsake those who call on His name. “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2).
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Jesus saves! He calls out to you to surrender yourself to Him so that He may guide you to heaven. He asks you to trust in Him to straighten your path. He died so that you might have life and have it to the fullest. You can count on Him to be your Savior too. Please pray with me:
Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us enough to send Your Son to be our Savior. Stop our desires to save ourselves and give us the courage to surrender our all to the only one who can save us from sin and death. Amen.
