Psalm 39 – The Sojourner

I will guard my ways, that I may not sin

I will guard my mouth with a muzzle

I’ll be mute and silent, holding my peace

I’ll make stillness a part of the puzzle

Lord, measure my days that I may not doubt

My days are all numbered and brief

A man is mere breath, a shadow in time

A short life of greed and of grief

And now, O Lord, for what do I wait?

Forgive me for all of my sin

Keep me from scorn produced by a fool

Give me Your hope from within

I weaken with grief by the weight of Your wrath

Remove your rage from my sight

You punish a man with rebukes for His sin

Consumed like a moth in the light

My prayer, O Lord, is for peace in our time

I’m a sojourner as well as a guest

Look away from my faults that I may still smile

And find peace so that I may then rest.
