Bible Study Questions – Matthew 3:13-17

 

This is the first we hear from Jesus in Scripture since the time He was age 12 in the temple. Why do you think we are told nothing about the time in between?

 

Why did Jesus need to be baptized? Verse 15; Psalm 40:7-8; Luke 12:50; John 4:34; 8:29; 2 Corinthians 5:21

 

What does it mean “for us” to fulfill all righteousness? Matthew 5:6, 10, 6:1, 23:27-28, 25:31-40

 

How is Jesus’ righteousness confirmed? Verse 17

 

What does Righteousness * mean? Leviticus 19:36; Deuteronomy 25:1; Psalm 1:6; Isaiah 46:12-13 Isaiah 61; Nehemiah 9:7-8; Matthew 5:19-20; Romans 1:16-17, 9:30-10:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:10; James 2:18-23

 

Where else do we read of God the Father’s pleasure with His Son? Isaiah 42:1-9; Matthew 12:9-21, 17:1-5

 

Why did John hesitate to baptize Jesus? John 1:25-27  If you were John how would you have handled Jesus request, considering you were baptizing for repentance and He was free of sin?

 

Where is the Trinity testified to in this part of Scripture?

 

Why did John choose this place to baptize? John 3:23

 

Why is this first step in Jesus’ earthly ministry so significant?

 

What is the significance of the heavens opening?  What catastrophic event happened when Adam and Eve fell from grace? Revelations 4:1-2

 

What does Jesus servant hood, obedience and identification mean to you and your faith?

 

For us today, we can receive forgiveness of our sins because Jesus represented us as a man and was also fully God to take our sins and receive God’s wrath in our place. Why is this important and how can you explain it to a friend who does not think it is important?

 

John had devoted his life to preparing for the arrival of Jesus. He had focused all of his energy toward this moment. He was set upon obedience. Yet the very first thing Jesus asked him to do, John resisted. He felt unqualified. Do you feel unqualified to fulfill your mission from God?
