Psalm 137 – By the Waters of Babylon

By the waters of Babylon we sat and cried

We remembered Zion and the hour she died

On the willows we hung our lyres to play

For our captors required our songs this day

“Sing us a song” they bitterly said

We replied we could not in Babylon tread

“How could we forget Jerusalem now?

May our tongues be stuck so as not to allow.”

Now they said, “Lay it bare, lay it bare.”

Down to its foundations tear

Babylon, doomed to be destroyed

God’s great wrath they cannot avoid
