October 10, 2023 | Martin Luther – Day 35

“All people, be they ever so wild, worship a god. Therefore, they know that there is a god. It is as Paul says: ‘Those who do not believe that there is a god are swimming against the stream.’”

Martin Luther

Luther’s interpretation above is from Paul’s statement in Romans 1:18-20 which says in full, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

Luther’s interpretation above emphasizes the folly of those reaching for false gods invented by their own desperate imaginations. Though, in their hearts they know there is a god, they reach out for whatever gods will allow them to find comfort in false hope.

It is true that every person has a god, that one thing they place all of their hope and trust in. Some have false gods from false religions, some even secular. Others have gods of a different form. They might take on the form of wealth or fame or possessions. Other take on the demon looks of drugs and alcohol.

God says in Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before me.” God is not simply talking of false gods like Baal and Molech, He is speaking of anything that someone might replace the one true God with.

To live our lives in a certain way or to gain acceptance despite our actions, we form gods into our own image. Gods that allow us to live any kind of lifestyle, abuse any kind of stimulant and obey any kinds of law that allow for whatever depraved value system we follow.

But our Father in heaven wants more for His children. He knows that only He can lead us to true peace. Only He can take us to those places we were created for and only He can provide for us the answers in life that we truly seek. Only His path will lead us to righteousness. Only He knows what will satisfy our souls.

Today, make it your last day of dependance on whatever false God’s you have been holding on to. Surrender to the only one who can provide for you the hope you seek.

Our Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for guiding us to the truth and for loving us enough to never give up on us, even as we search for other gods. Forgive our unfaithfulness and lead us to the answers we seek that match up with Your good and gracious will. Amen.
